Rehab is a very stressful time not just for the person checking into the rehab facility, but also for the person's family and friends waiting for them to come out on the other side. There's a lot of questions at this point about the rehab process in general, including how each step benefits the patient. For this guide, the rehab process described is generally a drug rehab process, but other addictions can be handled in rehab as well.
The first step in the drug rehab process is detoxification. While the word sounds complicated, this first step is both the hardest and the easiest. It involves stabilizing the body by completely removing the body's dependence on the drug addiction. This is done chemically under strict medical supervision, and does require some getting over the withdrawal symptoms caused by not having the drug circulating in the body anymore.
Keep in mind that detoxification is a physical process and not a mental one. In other words, removing the body's physical addiction to the drugs is only part of the solution. The mental addiction to a drug must also be addressed during the rehab process.
Generally, the next step is counseling and treatment for the mental side of the drug addiction. During rehab, new bonds of support are built to support the person going through recovery from their addiction, which is critical in making sure relapse does not occur.
Many rehab facilities focus on a comprehensive support approach when it comes to helping people overcome drug addictions. This means doing alternative activities that take up the time that used to only be devoted to drug use, such as being out around nature or developing new hobbies such as painting and drawing. In fact, many successful rehab patients point to their stay in rehab as the key to discovering a new hobby they never would have developed if they hadn't taken the steps to break away from their drug addiction.
All things considered, the rehab process is not complicated, but it is the tiny details that will determine whether or not the person entering rehab will walk out of it successfully. It's up to that person to fully participate in the rehab process in order to make the recovery that they deserve.
